Welshpool follow near neighbours lead

Welshpool Football Club have followed town neighbours Waterloo Rovers in recruiting from within as they bid to re-capture the glory days for the ailing side.

Following two successive relegations from football’s top flight to the Spar Division One, Welshpool have announced that impressive reserve team boss Adam Knight will become their fifth manager in 12 months, replacing Chris Herbert who stood down last week. The club will now fold its reserve team to focus on the senior set-up.

Knight, who won the Montgomeryshire Amateur League Division Two title in his first full season in charge, received the unanimous backing of the club committee.

A club spokesperson said: “The general feeling was one of delight at the appointment of a very promising, local, young manager who had in place a readymade side of local players.

“Despite rumours to the contrary, Welshpool Football Club will be competing in the Spar Mid Wales Division One next season and the reserve side shall cease to exist."

However, behind the scenes the club still faces a rocky road. Key committee posts have still not been filled with one of the favourites for the chairman’s spot, Liam Pritchard, believed to be reluctant to pursue it due to family and work commitments.
