Sad Loss to Welsh and Mid Wales Football

Will Lloyd from Bont passes away

Wil Lloyd, regarded by many as one of Aberystwyth Town's greatest ever players, died on Monday after a long illness. He was 68.

The popular mid-field maestro made 404 appearances for the black and greens and won one youth cap and eight amateur international caps for Wales. He also played one season for Llanidloes in the Mid Wales League.

Wil first played for Aber in the Mid Wales League when he was 14 and then for the club's Welsh League (South) side at the age of 15. He was a member of the Aberystwyth Team that won the Welsh Amateur Cup in 1970 and played a key role in one of the most successful periods in the club's history.

Will was one of the most skilful players ever to play for Aberystwyth and he also scored 144 goals between 1962 and 1982. He could spread a 30 yard pass with pin point accuracy and was the master of the 'nutmeg'.

In his early years as a footballer Wil had the opportunity to turn professional with Cardiff City but declined in order to pursue a teaching career.

Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Gwyneth, his son Rhodri, daughter Rhian and other members of his family.

The League is grateful to Roy Hancock and Dai Pugh for the information above a he was a great servant of Welsh Football.
