Where there’s a Will

After notching 17 goals in his last seven games, Will Thomas has underlined his reputation as one of local football’s sharpest shooters

The Berriew hitman has enjoyed incredible form this season, blasting relegated Berriew up to second in the Spar Mid Wales Division One and capturing the interests of a host of clubs monitoring his form. But the striker insists that he is taking things one game at a time.

“I’m not thinking about other clubs watching my form,” he said. “I’m just concentrating on Berriew at the moment. I’ve got a few good mates there and there’s a lot of good players at the club and the set up has improved so much over the last couple of years so I am happy.
“A couple of clubs did get in touch with me in the summer and I went pre-season training with Guilsfield which is a club with brilliant facilities, so obviously it was hard to turn them down because of them being in the Alliance as well.

Last season, Thomas scored 24 goals in the Alliance in a Berriew team that fell victim to the restructuring of Welsh football which resulted in relegation. But the striker believes they can bounce back at the first attempt.

“We are playing good football at the moment and sit second in the table, but there are a couple of teams with games in hand that can go ahead of us. I think we can win the league if we play to our full potential every week. It’s just keeping the standard we know we can play week in week out.
“The Cymru Alliance is a very good league and I think we were hard done by going down but it’s just unfortunate the Welsh Premier changed its format when it did.”

As for this season’s target? Thomas hasn’t publicly set one but few will bet against him finishing top scorer based on current form.

“I haven’t really set a goals target,” he admitted: “I’m just taking each match as it comes. It would be nice to score every week but I don’t expect to. Just so long as Berriew win then I’m happy!”
