MID SEASON REVIEW

By Phil Woosnam

Its Llanfair's to lose

Its Llanfair Utd who head the table by 12pts going into the New Year and it will now need a minor miracle for them to slip up during the second half of the season.
There is little doubt that to date, they have been the outstanding team in the League and they look set (criteria permitted) to step up to the Cymru Alliance next season. To date, only themselves and Penrhyncoch have applied for promotion.
Behind them are a cluster of clubs with the League this season being far more competitive than in recent times.
Aberystwyth Uni have probably left themselves with too much to do at the wrong end of the table with only three points to show to date.
Just above them, Montgomery and Tywyn Bryncrug have improved recently to put pressure on the teams above them who have also showed an improvement in form. It looks as if the fight against relegation will go down to the wire as there will be a lot of doubt as to how many teams will actually be relegated due to the Leagues above them in the pyramid.
At present, it looks as if two teams from the North will be relegated from the Welsh Premier League into the Cymru Alliance which affects their numbers to be relegated. If it is assumed that all clubs requesting promotion pass the relevant tests, then as many as four clubs could be relegated from the Alliance League into the feeder leagues of which, the Spar League is one.
Llandrindod and Llanidloes currently fill two of those positions which may mean that three clubs could be relegated from Division 1 into Division 2 assuming that both clubs in Division 2 wish to be promoted. If a further Mid Wales club drops into the bottom four of the Alliance, then a further club would have to be relegated from Division 1 to adhere to FAW regulations in that no League can run with more than 16 clubs in any one season.
As far as Division 2 is concerned, a very strong Knighton team have now passed long time leaders Hay St Mary’s although both still look favourites to fill those positions come season end with Kerry probably being the only other major challenger.
Relegation from this league is another issue and teams will only be relegated if a club filling one of the top two positions in the feeder leagues request to be considered by 31st December,2014 and meet the criteria. To date, only Bettws have officially applied although it is believed that Dolgellau’s application is in the post.
Therefore, it looks as if there is still much to play for at both ends of each Division which will lead to further excitement over the coming months.
